Consistently recognized as a high performing hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital provides world-class treatment for patients with the recently completed South Pavilion being Duke Health’s largest investment in the area. The nearly $196 million dollar project included renovations to the hospital’s existing bed tower in addition to the new South Pavilion featuring 92 single-occupancy patient rooms, nine state-of-the-art operating suites and a new kitchen/café for patients and visitors.

An aspect of this major expansion was a new unified entrance that connected the existing hospital with new addition. In addition to establishing a clear entry point, a new large, open lobby was created with a distinct glass entrance vestibule anchoring the space.

The feeling of openness and transparency was formed with the use of glass fins and minimal point-supported glass hardware.

In partnership with the glazing contractor – SPS Corporation – we refined the design of this glass vestibule to ensure the minimal visible support.

While our adjustable doc & pin hardware was visible, many elements of our custom-designed support were not. From the stainless steel fin shoes recessed into the concrete floor that support the vertical glass fins to the three-way glass corner connector brackets, our expertise in creating elegant glass vestibules was utilized.

An interesting element of our design (and one we have honed over the many glass vestibule projects we have completed) is the consideration of the tie-in of the glass vestibule to the entrance door portal (and cladding). Our design engineering approach ensure that all critical loads and movements are considered in this dynamic connection point.

This vestibule measures 5.5m [19’] wide x 3.1m [10’] high x 3.5m [11’6”] deep.
